Like all good science fiction, The Day the Earth Stood Still used a fantastical premise to warn about contemporary cultural concerns. The film was made just as the Cold War was growing white hot. Korea had exploded into war. The Soviet Union and the USA were developing ever more powerful nuclear weapons. People were scared about the future of humanity.
